Bernd Lohaus

Geboren in Düsseldorf (DE), overleden in Antwerpen (BE).
Bernd Lohaus woonde en werkte in Antwerpen, maar werd geboren in Duitsland. Die twee plaatsen spelen een rol in het werk van de kunstenaar. Kenmerkend is vooral het materiaalgebruik en het gebruik van taal. Lohaus werkte meestal met hout dat hij vond op wandelingen langs de Schelde. Het is aangespoeld hout of hout gebruikt in de haven; materiaal dat dus al een leven achter de rug heeft voor het in het atelier van de kunstenaar belandde. De sporen daarvan blijven zichtbaar in het afgewerkte kunstwerk. Lohaus wijzigde de aard van zijn materialen nooit. Hij voer er slechts kleine ingrepen op uit. Naast hout gebruikte Lohaus ook papier, karton, steen enz. Op die materialen bracht hij woorden aan: hij kraste ze in het materiaal (zoals bij gedenktekens die een herinnering zijn aan iemand of iets dat is geweest) of bracht ze erop aan met krijt. Het zijn vooral voornaamwoorden, voorzetsels, voegwoorden enz., altijd in het Duits. Het gaat altijd om tegengestelde begrippen of woorden. De woorden verwijzen naar de afstand tussen mensen en dingen, hoe die zich ten opzichte van elkaar kunnen positioneren in verschillende onderlinge relaties, maar eigenlijk nooit kunnen samenvallen. Lohaus wil met zijn werken de relatie onderzoeken tussen 'Ich' en 'Du' (ik en jij), tussen de kunstenaar, de kijker en het kunstwerk, maar ook tussen mensen onderling en tussen mensen en dingen in het algemeen. Lohaus’ beeldtaal is zeer eenvoudig, zowel qua materiaal als qua vormgeving. Zijn materialen hebben iets puurs, iets natuurlijks, iets van het leven zelf. Er gaat een grote poëzie uit van zijn werk. Naast sculpturen maakte Lohaus ook tekeningen. Lohaus was in de jaren zestig een leerling van Joseph Beuys aan de Staatliche Kunstakademie van Dusseldorf.
