Bert De Leeuw
1926 - 2007
'Bert de Leeuw is a matière painter and his paintings look like old, time-weathered cement walls, in which children, to amuse themselves, would have inscribed formless line drawings. It is a gray, dark, we might almost say, black art, which incidentally is a synonym of sorcery with evil spirits, and also points to magical appeal of this poetic miserabilisme.' (Maurits Bilcke n.a.v. De Prijs Jonge Belgische Schilderkunst, 12 februari 1960)
