Ria Pacquée (°1954) is sinds 1979 actief als kunstenares en brengt toevallige situaties en objecten uit de alledaagse wereld in beeld. De straat, de markt, kerkhoven en de woestijn vormen haar werkterrein.
Aanvankelijk bestaat haar werk uit performances en bodyart. In 1981 roept ze het personage ‘Madame’ in het leven, het personage wordt door haarzelf gespeeld. In foto’s van performances legt de kunstenares fragmenten uit het leven van ‘Madame’ bloot. Hoewel licht humoristisch spreken deze foto’s wel van een eindeloze eenzaamheid.
Sinds 1992 doet Pacquée afstand van de performance en vat ze zelf post achter de camera. Vanaf dan volgen verschillende reeksen elkaar op. In haar street ramblings leiden voorwerpen en individuen een geïsoleerd bestaan, ze staan buiten de maatschappij. We krijgen letterlijk de achterkant te zien.
Het latere werk van Pacquée wordt gekenmerkt door observatie, met sterke elementen uit visuele antropologie en politieke commentaar.
