Amal Kenawy

1974 - 2012

Born in Caïro (EG).

Amal Kenawy’s divergent oeuvre includes videos, performances, installations, sculptures, photographs, paintings and drawings. Together with her brother and mentor, Abdel Ghany Kenawy, she created large works that abolish the boundary between art and science by using laws of nature. Moreover, Abdel Kenawy played a large part in her oeuvre, in which she investigated her identity in relation to the world. Amal Kenawy revealed the metaphorical world that is concealed behind corporality. While Kenawy goes under in a dream full of illusions and vague memories of reality, her identity is gradually dissolving. “The inner self is a reflection of the imaginary, the controversial and the unrealistic”, she stated. Her nightmarish dreams deal with universal human feelings such as love, anxiety, insecurity, hope, powerlessness and violence. The artist’s intense personal and emotionally oeuvre reflects the human vulnerability.
