Angel Vergara

° 1958

Born in Mieres (ES), lives in Brussels (BE).

Spanish artist Angel Vergara (°1958, Mieres, Spain) has lived in Brussels for more than thirty years. Over the years, he embraced the Belgian surrealist tradition and the more critical intellectual praxis. Central to Vergara's work is often art, and the art world itself, of which he criticises the monetary aspects and the creative tension between the elitist art experience and everyday popular culture.

Vergara uses an extensive visual vocabulary: installations, performances, sculptures, sketches, videos, etc. Whatever medium he uses, through the maximum use of its pictorial qualities and the surprising combinations with the painting praxis, he proves his dedication and his mastery of the art of painting.

About M HKA / Mission Statement

The M HKA is a museum for contemporary art, film and visual culture in its widest sense. It is an open place of encounter for art, artists and the public. The M HKA aspires to play a leading role in Flanders and to extend its international profile by building upon Antwerp's avant-garde tradition. The M HKA bridges the relationship between artistic questions and wider societal issues, between the international and the regional, artists and public, tradition and innovation, reflection and presentation. Central here is the museum's collection with its ongoing acquisitions, as well as related areas of management and research.
