Azat Sargsyan

° 1965

Born in Yerevan (AM), lives in Yerevan (AM).

Azat Sargsyan's art plays with how history is constructed and deconstructed and how this is related to our personal and collective memory.

His art practice is rooted in live performance. From a position of self-imposed humiliation, deeply rooted in early Armenian performance art of the seventies, Sargsyan has tried to visualise and understand history in the making, through images from the mass media.

Since the 1990s, Sargsyan participates in several prestigious exhibitions such as the Venice, São Paulo and Moscow Biennials. He is also co-founder and artistic director of the Gyumri Biennial, which started in 1998.
