Eugenio Dittborn

° 1943

Born in Santiago (CL), lives in Santiago (CL).

Eugenio Dittborn was born in Chile in 1943 (making him a thirty-year old witness of the military coup in 1973), and continues to live and work in his native country; it is inevitable that his work should bear the traces of living through Chile’s many political upheavals - in fact, they have often been the source of inspiration for some of the artist’s greatest works. During the Pinochet dictatorship [1973-1990] Dittborn started developing his strategy of so-called “Airmail Paintings”, sending his paintings [often serially executed on large sheets of Kraft paper] around the world via airmail.

About M HKA / Mission Statement

The M HKA is a museum for contemporary art, film and visual culture in its widest sense. It is an open place of encounter for art, artists and the public. The M HKA aspires to play a leading role in Flanders and to extend its international profile by building upon Antwerp's avant-garde tradition. The M HKA bridges the relationship between artistic questions and wider societal issues, between the international and the regional, artists and public, tradition and innovation, reflection and presentation. Central here is the museum's collection with its ongoing acquisitions, as well as related areas of management and research.
