Lygia Pape

1929 - 2004

Born in Nova Friburgo, RJ (Brazil), died in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).

Some of Lygia Pape’s best-known works, such as Divisor, have become icons of an art movement which explored the potential of social interactions in public space. In a series of works from the late 1960s, Magnetized Spaces, Pape’s interest in architecture can be seen through her photographic observations of crowd behavior. A more recent installation, DNA, (2003), is now on view in A RUA.

After a recent retrospective in the the Museo de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, Pape’s work can be seen in the the Serpentine Gallery in London (7 December 2011 - 19 February 2012).

About M HKA / Mission Statement

The M HKA is a museum for contemporary art, film and visual culture in its widest sense. It is an open place of encounter for art, artists and the public. The M HKA aspires to play a leading role in Flanders and to extend its international profile by building upon Antwerp's avant-garde tradition. The M HKA bridges the relationship between artistic questions and wider societal issues, between the international and the regional, artists and public, tradition and innovation, reflection and presentation. Central here is the museum's collection with its ongoing acquisitions, as well as related areas of management and research.
