Pieter Engels was born in Amsterdam in 1938 and has been an active participant in the Dutch conceptual art scene since the late sixties, when the Dutch capital in particular was a major hub of vanguard, genre-defining (and -defying) cultural activity. Like so much of the work produced by many of his European contemporaries, Engels’ conceptually inflected practice reflects upon the politics (or, more pointedly, the economics) of the art world in a manner that shows a clear debt to Fluxus’ ethic of insolence and irreverence, often using language in a way that is quite distinct from the grave austerity of American conceptual art.
