Ricardo Brey

Lives in Ghent (Belgium), born in Havana (Cuba).

Ricardo Brey (Havana, 1955)  is a Cuban-born visual artist; a graduate from the San Alejandro School of Art and the Cuban National School of Art. His artistic roots lie in the 1970s and 1980s when he was an active member of the group Volumen I, today this group represents the emergence of a new generation of avant-garde artists in Cuba after the 1959 revolution. 

After travelling extensively and receiving an invitation to participate in the Documenta IX in Kassel, Brey moved to Ghent in 1990 and continues to live and work there. In 1997 he was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship for Installation Art and Sculpture and also received the Culture  Prize for visual art from the Flemish government.
