Robert Morris

° 1931

Born in Kansas City (Missouri) (United States).

Robert Morris (1931, US, lives in New York) starts as a painter with a strong interest in dance and improvisational theatre. The performative and the participatory have remained of essence in his mature work from the 1960s onwards, which largely happens in the sphere of sculpture. Like many of his peers and contemporaries, he takes inspiration from Duchamp. Appearance and meaning, form and action are pitched against each other in Morris’s oeuvre, comprising minimalist large-scale structures (often outdoor pieces), conceptual undertakings such as Box with the Sound of Its Own Making and staged encounters between human performers and sculptural objects.
