Tony Oursler

° 1957

Born in New York (US), lives in New York (US).

American artist Tony Oursler is primarily known for his experimental work in the twilight zone between sculpture and the projected image, which lends an entirely new meaning to the old concept of ‘animation’. His signature works often show human faces (invariably talking, and incessantly so) projected onto the soft surfaces of a stuffed dummy propped up to resemble the human form – classic representations, in short, of that which Sigmund Freud, in a celebrated essay from 1919, has termed “the uncanny”.
