Haegue Yang

A prolific artist, Haegue Yang can be credited for pioneering a distinct contemporary approach to notions of selfhood and community, operating on the levels of conceptualism and abstraction. Yang is a transdisciplinary artist whose installations are imbued with a strong sense of poetics and politics, offering reflections on the notion of precarity, particularly in relation to such subjects as home, displacement, social class and labour. Her works combine numerous items traditionally found within domestic spaces, such as furniture, lights, appliances, drying racks and Venetian blinds, and the different objects are encouraged to co-exist in fragile yet sensuous sculptural arrangements.

Yang has exhibited her work several times at M HKA over the last fifteen years, with key installations being included in the exhibition If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want to Be Part of Your Revolution (2007) and most recently in the exhibition Eurasia – A Landscape of Mutability (2021). Perhaps most significantly, Yang participated in the exhibition Don’t You Know Who I Am!– Art After Identity Politics (2014) with a previous iteration of VIP’s Union (since 2001). This important research exhibition defined a new reading of contemporary art, analysing the modes and means by which a new generation of artists now consider human subjectivity and diversity in relation to latent aesthetic and philosophical dimensions.
