Rustam Khalfin

Video, 00:07:00.
Materials: dvd

Collection: Collection M HKA, Antwerp (Inv. no. S0439_2).

In the video Love Races (created in collaboration with Yuliya Tikhonova), a couple is making love on top of a horse, re-enacting Chinese imagery, an outsider view on the life of Kazakh nomads. Khalfin took inspiration from the book “Chinese Eros”, which contains two series of watercolors from the 18th and 19th centuries. Painted in Northern China, they show love scenes on horses. Their common name is “Northern Barbarians”. This is what the Chinese people called the nomads from which they were separated by the Great Wall of China. This film reconstructs their ancient way of love.

About M HKA / Mission Statement

The M HKA is a museum for contemporary art, film and visual culture in its widest sense. It is an open place of encounter for art, artists and the public. The M HKA aspires to play a leading role in Flanders and to extend its international profile by building upon Antwerp's avant-garde tradition. The M HKA bridges the relationship between artistic questions and wider societal issues, between the international and the regional, artists and public, tradition and innovation, reflection and presentation. Central here is the museum's collection with its ongoing acquisitions, as well as related areas of management and research.
