The artist takes a trip. Away from the rigidity of his usual patterns and muted tones of his colour palette. He captures a moment of joy when he boards the Staten Island ferry in New York. It has been raining and a somewhat whimsical rainbow forms on the wet asphalt that cuts through the word 'liberty' written in bronze letters on the road. A rare phenomenon, which means this image immediately adopted a symbolic value for Van den Broek. Another work from the same series (Liberty #3) is the production image for Choreolab, an experimental programme whereby the dancers present their own creations in complete freedom and in an uninhibited manner.
