Black Curtain

Nikos Alexiou

2010-2011

Sculpture, 197 x 136 x 6.5 cm.
Materials: straw, paper, twine

Collection: National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (Inv. no. 1048/15).

From the end of the 1980s the artist creates the characteristic group of works with the “curtains”. He uses paper, a material that is predominant in his work, in order to produce works with repeated lace motifs. The works of this series are the result of a long, arduous, manual procedure, which is of especial importance to the artist. The “Black curtain”, with its fragile and flowing form, exudes a poetic quality and expresses the symbolic dimension of the artist’s work.  Certain elements - such as repetition, dedication to the motif, to the handcrafted and to spirituality - appear often in Alexiou’s work.
