Michelangelo Pistoletto started out as image-maker, and decided that the reflection on the image was more important than the image per se; he refuses to be representational. He points out to the symbolic moment where he breaks with Castelli over ‘1M³ of Eternity’. Castelli can’t accept this as an image. The image is not about representation but about understanding. This work is a about reflection that makes the universe. Reflection as a mental process and the division of cells. First there is nothing, after reflection there are two people and then four,… The more reflection, the more identification. These works are about mirroring, duplication, how the human body, the universe and how the mental space comes to existence. This abstraction/reflection on the real world is existing and also an essential part of the image. The image becomes what is happening around it. The world minus one.
