"Between genesis and reality lie 3 years; de realization of this project was not an easy one. [...] I started this project in the middle of 1982. I send out questionnaires to artists, art critics, art historians, gallery holders, museum CEO's...at home and abroad. My question where: - Is there a breach between contemporary art-expression and society? - If answered yes, what is the main cause for this? - If answered no, explain your answer. I spend out 450 letters and got only 69 replies. They were all admitted. Unfortunately the budget did not allow me to have them translated: the answers were printed in facsimile. This is not only my work, but foremost the work of everybody that had any part in it, for which I thank you. It does not show an insight or approach of the thesis, but a scale of sometimes opposing views. I can yield them, you can yield them. It is part of seeing the complexity in our thoughts about art and it's relation to the society. It is part of something greater that strains to contain and embrace this complexity. Daniel Dewaele, 15th of March 1985." - Daniel Dewaele
