Motorisch-mentale compositie

Filip Francis

1979

Materials: tempera, canvas

Collection: Collection M HKA, Antwerp (Inv. no. S0140).

In his so-called motor-mental compositions, Filip Francis examines to what extent coincidence, in combination with other psychophysical circumstances, influences the creation of a painting and thus also affects the result. The artist realizes paintings with the left hand, with the right hand, with the left foot, with the mouth, in a drunken state or in a moving vehicle. In this way he wants to make the viewer think about the question whether a work in which coincidence plays a part would be inferior in comparison with other works.

These experiments fit within a broader research that Filip Francis conducts towards the foundations of painting. The artist asks questions about the basic conditions for painting and the extent to which our visual perception is decisive for what we see.
