Item: Posters for Antwerpen '93 (from the series ‘On taking on a normal situation’)

Andrea Fraser

1993

Poster
Materials: ink, paper

Collection: Collection M HKA, Antwerp (Inv. no. M00117).

American artist Andrea Fraser made these posters as her contribution for the project Contemporary Art in Antwerp ’93 (Antwerp was European Capital of Culture in 1993). She based her versions on the official poster-design for Antwerpen ’93.

"I didn’t want to exhibit in a museum, but outside, in the city. And I wanted to make a connection with Antwerpen 93, Cultural Capital of Europe. That’s why I took their official posters as my starting-point. The questions posed on the posters contain a lot of suppositions about art and its function in society. By replacing these slogans with other texts, I try to expose these. For example, ‘Do you have to understand art to like it?’, arises from the supposition that if you understand art, then you’ll also like it." - Andrea Fraser

About M HKA / Mission Statement

The M HKA is a museum for contemporary art, film and visual culture in its widest sense. It is an open place of encounter for art, artists and the public. The M HKA aspires to play a leading role in Flanders and to extend its international profile by building upon Antwerp's avant-garde tradition. The M HKA bridges the relationship between artistic questions and wider societal issues, between the international and the regional, artists and public, tradition and innovation, reflection and presentation. Central here is the museum's collection with its ongoing acquisitions, as well as related areas of management and research.
