Groot Kwadrantenreliëf

Jan J. Schoonhoven

1964

Painting, 107,5 x 131,5 cm.
Materials: latex paint, papier-maché, chipboard

Collection: Collection VAM, Eindhoven (Inv. no. 430).

'Groot kwadratenreliëf' is made of papier-mâché and consists of hundreds of small squares, which – because they are hand-made – are all different from each other. The light that falls on them emphasizes the irregularities in the rigid composition.

Schoonhoven chooses to express his ideas through geometrical forms, which are then repeated. In this way, structures emerge where no single element stands out; avoiding preference is for the artist, in fact, of extremely importance.
